Our Breeders

Our Commitment

Petland’s mission is to enhance the human–animal bond and provide lifelong companions for our customers. To support this mission, we’ve developed strict requirements that guide every step of our process. In addition, Petland remains dedicated to improving conditions for all dogs in the communities we serve. Through continued commitment, we encourage the highest standards of pet care and responsible breeding practices. Furthermore, our stores build trusted relationships with pet providers to ensure transparency and quality care. Each independently owned store is held accountable for visiting and reviewing the facilities where their puppies are raised. To learn more, watch the videos below and discover the story behind where our puppies come from.

Where do Petland Puppies come from?

1. USDA licensed breeders and distributors

With no direct violations in the past 24 months, Petland’s operations team remains active and engaged. The team travels nationwide to visit breeders and ensure proper care standards. In addition, they look for breeders committed to improving animal welfare and ethical practices. Petland corporate staff and store owners also visit licensed breeders to verify they meet company requirements. To strengthen accountability, the Vice President of Animal Welfare Education conducts additional visits to approved breeders. He also works closely with local, state, and federal agencies to promote animal welfare education and legislation.

Petland requires our breeders to provide:

  • Safe, comfortable housing with ample room
  • Regular socialization and exercise
  • Access to a consulting veterinarian

2. Hobby breeders as defined by the Animal Welfare Act

These are the small-scale breeders who raise their dogs in a humane manner.

3. Local adoption pets that are vet-checked.

Some of our puppies and kittens come from local animal shelters or community members through Petland’s Adopt-A-Pet program, which is dedicated to finding loving homes for homeless pets. In addition, this long-standing program has helped place hundreds of thousands of shelter and community animals with caring families across the country. To further support pet health, each Petland location partners with a consulting veterinarian who examines every Adopt-A-Pet before placement. Moreover, many Petland stores host special adoption day events to raise awareness and give more pets the chance to find forever homes. Through these combined efforts, Petland continues to strengthen its commitment to responsible pet care and community involvement.

The USDA plays a vital role in protecting both families and pets through its strict oversight and regulations. In addition, this is the same federal agency that ensures the safety of the food we eat every day. Because of this, we trust its authority to help keep our animals safe and healthy. Furthermore, the USDA employs approximately 120 field inspectors who conduct routine inspections across about 1,700 USDA-licensed kennels nationwide. Through these inspections, the agency helps ensure compliance with federal standards for animal care and facility conditions.

Beyond federal oversight, our breeders must also meet the detailed requirements outlined in the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). This important law sets standards for animal housing, handling, and overall health. Although shelters and rescues are not covered under this comprehensive act, Petland’s breeders are directly subject to its regulations. In addition to federal requirements, many states and local governments enforce their own animal welfare laws. As a result, the breeders who partner with Petland Terre Haute must meet federal, state, and local regulations that ensure the highest level of care and compliance.

Petland Standards: The Highest Breeder Requirements

Over our many years in business, we have remained leaders in promoting the continuous improvement of responsible breeders. In doing so, we require all breeders to comply with federal, state, and local laws while also meeting Petland’s higher internal standards for breeding practices. In addition, APHIS inspectors from the Animal Care Division conduct unannounced compliance inspections to ensure animals receive proper care and humane treatment. Beyond these regulations, we expect our breeders to go above and beyond the minimum requirements set by law. As part of this commitment, we ask our breeders to maintain exceptional living conditions and compassionate care for every animal. Specifically, here are a few things we require our breeders to provide for the pets in their care:

  •  A consulting veterinarian providing good medical care.
    • A consulting vet must create a written program for the breeder to follow that ensures the health of the dogs and is available for the USDA to inspect and review.
    • The breeder must maintain written veterinarian records of the medical care they perform.
    • To ensure every puppy’s health, the veterinarian must provide vaccinations against diseases and parasites such as:
      • Parvo
      • Distemper
      • Hepatitis
      • Leptospirosis
      • Rabies
      • Bordetella
      • Internal parasites (intestinal worms, heartworms, blood parasites)
      • External parasites (fleas, ticks, flies)
      • Prior to arrival in our store, every puppy will have received a minimum of two vaccinations against the major viruses that can affect puppies and dogs.
      • Every puppy will be current on de-wormings and preventatives against common parasites (Coccidia and giardia).
      • The vet also consults with the breeder operations team to provide good nutrition, exercise, hygiene, and socialization for the puppies and dogs.
  • Safe and comfortable housing.
    • We require all our breeders to maintain structurally sound and protective housing that keeps the dogs and puppies at their facility dry and clean.
    • It must protect animals from injury and have no sharp edges or places for them to get hurt.
    • It should keep them from getting out and into trouble while providing them enough space to walk, sit, and lie comfortably.
    • It also must have convenient and easy access to clean food and water.
  • Frequent socialization and exercise.
    • During our breeder visits, we make sure our breeders provide opportunities for the dogs to exercise – with other dogs and with humans.
    • This includes access to an open area or run or a group area where puppies can play with each other.

An ongoing, transparent process

At Petland, we take every concern seriously and thoroughly investigate any claims about breeder facilities that don’t meet our requirements. In addition, we believe transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining trust with our customers and our communities. Moreover, we understand and deeply respect the sensitivities surrounding these concerns; after all, no one cares more about our puppies’ health and well-being than we do.
